A miniature horse called Eskimo almost outshone the frocks as Thurley unveiled their Spring racewear offering over a celeb and stylist-studded brunch this morning.
Designer Helen O’Connor will naturally be sporting her own label to Caulfield, Derby, Oaks and maybe Melbourne Cup Day this year. And she’ll be showcasing several minimal headpieces of her own creation atop her crown (they are strictly money-can’t-buy this year, but consider this a strong hint at a coming first for Thurley, to come next Spring carnival).
Of her non-traditional aesthetic Helen explains “I like that approach to the races…Jess Gomes and the other DJs ambassador both wore really innovative mesh over the eyes [to past carnivals] and it’s a bit more of a modern approach. I do design specifically with the races in mind. [My designs are] architectural, ladylike and abide by the dresscodes.”
Her Armadale boutique is currently laid out to be inspirational for disparate raceday dressing as well as for the upcoming polo which the designer thinks is “becoming bigger and bigger and people can be a bit unsure about what to wear there”. She recommends imagining yourself in an outfit suited to swanning around in “St Tropez!” I don’t think that’s a bad mantra to have for what to wear to the races either. Or simply life in general.
