Emporio Armani National Art School Exhibition

Art by Jordan Beenkan and Rhys Davis at Emporio Armani

This week Emporio Armani showcased selected pieces by postgraduate artist from the National Art School in a travelling exhibition. Vogue says this fashion/art fusion is a “smart match: the youthful strength of Emporio Armani married with Australia’s…most innovative art school.” As the nation’s oldest art institute NAS has seen such teachers and alumni as William Dobell, Max Dupain, Jeffrey Smart, Margaret Olley and John Olsen through their halls. Sprinkled among racks of designed clothing you’ll find digital video to sophisticated and simplistic sculptures. I wish they’d been able to include Gabriella Hirst’s floating installation of a forest of magic crystal trees, but then again that may have defoliated all over ze couture.

Alas this exhibit is fleeting; see it at Emporio Armani, 123 Collins Street, Melbourne from 10am to 6pm until this Sunday 14th July.
