L’Oreal Paris Runway 5 at LMFF 2013

“You sort of look back and think ‘was it really that long ago?’” reminisced Arthur Galan who celebrated his label’s 15th birthday amid the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival this year.

“It’s been an amazing journey,” relays the designer who in 1999 thought, “let’s just open the store and put some clothes in there and see what happens” to put it simply. The Chapel Street, South Yarra store was a success. Just six months later on the eve of Arthur and his intrinsic partner-in-everything Mimi’s wedding day they opened a second store. His commerce degree must have helped in this seemingly smooth (aside from the occasional run-in with Peta) career. But behind the scenes building Arthur Galan AG has involved, “blood, sweat and tears and lots of fun”.

So what’s changed over the past decade and a half? “The most exciting thing that’s happened is that guys are putting in so much effort to really taking care of what they wear and how they look. You see them at the spring racing carnival and they want to look better than the girls.”

The journey continues for Arthur and Mimi Galan; with concession stores opening up in Myer and their addition of a womenswear line six years ago. “I really have to thank my Grandfather. He was a tailor and he put it in my blood”.
