Myer Autumn / Winter showcase 2012

Set against a backdrop of golden strands of wheat at Mural Hall, Myer’s labels – now including Morrison and Autonomy – showcased their Autumn Winter collections. In such a setting you may think the braided, wispy hairstyles of the models is directly inspired by the colloquial ‘roll in the hay’. Not so, says hair director Kevin Murphy who I caught backstage fresh from tending to model Jessica Hart’s tresses. Rather the sewn-not-pinned look is designed to mimic being caught in a winter shower. Relaxed, hair-down styles were reserved for Jessica and Jennifer Hawkins as Kevin wanted to best show off the “high neck and long silhouettes” and “emphasis on collar and shoulders” that he noticed is a focus of this season’s fashion designs.

Directing the beauty look for the show was London-based Clare Lille for Illamasqua. Visiting Australia for the very first time, let alone having previously working with Myer, Clare developed two looks for the show. The first is a “nod towards the 1930’s and 40’s” but with a nudge toward a more modern, androgynous feel featuring high contouring through the eyes and cheeks and a buffed in lip stain. Contouring continues through the cheeks for her second look, this time complemented by a “cooler” smoky eye and strong, natural brows.

As for the fashion, Ellery kicked off the showcase by bringing back the peplum (I’m pro-peplum) and heavily utilising a gold fabric reminiscent of Meryl Streep’s Lanvin Oscars gown. While the wildly successful Sass & Bide aren’t usually my personal style, I have to admit my immediate thoughts upon seeing their A/W edit were quite primitive; “Gold. Glitter. Gimme!” I was seriously impressed by Arthur Galan AG’s womenswear; particularly his vaguely retro yet timelessly well-cut woollen coats and capes in rich blue, mustard and check. Jayson Brusdon’s collection was a creamy, dreamy series of floating capes, bows and lace. Balancing that out, the finale of Toni Maticevski was almost nightmarish in black and blue. My favourite piece; a biker jacket with wicked cut-out fringed sleeves.

What do you think of the rest of the show? Any must-buys for Autumn?

2 Thoughts on “Myer Autumn / Winter showcase 2012

  1. I love the show! There were so many pieces I liked, but my favourite would be the dress with flowy cape from Jayson Brunsdon.

  2. That cape was adorable Kim.
