Style Melbourne

Flemington’s Spring Fashion Lunch

Does this year seem to be galloping along in an attempt to race by as fast as Black Caviar? It’s only a few weeks until the Spring Racing Carnival hits its manic peak for the Melbourne Cup. For the first time ever I’ll be at Flemington for all four of major race days; Derby, Cup, Oaks and Stakes. Happily I’ll be heavily caffeinated as Italian coffee merchant Lavazza’s style reporter in their fabulous marquee (burlesque revivalist Dita Von Teese will be dropping by on Derby Day wearing her new ‘Muse’ fashion line alongside lots of other treats I can reveal shortly). Your can follow my adventures here and here during Melbourne Cup week.

I caught up with the Lavazza team recently as they kindly invited me to Flemington’s Spring Fashion Lunch. The petal-strewn event showcased racewear looks from Myer’s stable of labels alongside a glimpse of last year’s Design Award winner Anthony Capon (the avant garde local designer sure knows his way around a race-worthy look) and even a touch of opera.

Take some inspiration from labels below like Arthur Galan AG, Yeojin Bae, Kate Sylvester, Sass and Bide, Fleur Wood and Jayson Brunsden. A special thank you to Melbourne milliner Kerrie Stanley for lending me an orange, blooming headpiece for the day – I felt very glamourous, which is what any good hat should do.

Wearing my lovely hat with the milliner herself. I get stopped often when I wear this skirt; it’s by gorman (their summer collection is so fun this year).

I find it tricky to find a chic dress with sleeves; this one by Catharine Malandrino I’d love to wear on Cup day.
