DressCode: Lady Chatterley’s Lover Opening Night

I experienced my first proper theatre outing last night, as the Australian Shakespeare Company performed an adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s 1920’s classic (and très scandaleuse) novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover among the grounds – and sometimes in the trembling bushes – of the glorious Rippon Lea House. I thought lace on lace on lace would be a suitable look  in ode to the (once banned) story of a stifled privileged wife and her love affair with her husband’s grounds-keeper. I did have to add a few warming layers for the actual show under the stars. Into the forbidden garden we go…

Dress – Art Deco lace dress from Sportsgirl scooped up on sale, worn with vintage slip

Earrings – Joolz

Stockings – Levante, you can’t see but they have this wicked lace flourish trailing up the seam behind

Nail Polish – Fairytale Florals by BYS (a yummy nude hue for a pale one such as I)

Lady Chatterley’s Lover will be playing at Rippon Lea House and Gardens from Monday to Thursday at 7pm until 17th March 2011. Take a picnic rug, a bottle of something sparkly and a great date to cosy up to – might I suggest an outing with your Valentine? Tickets are $40 for adults. Booking details are here or tickets are available at the door until sold out. Enjoy lovers!

  1. Sounds wonderful and you look amazing. Very art deco inspired lacework!

But was the performance fabulous or humdrum? Very tempted to pop along ~ I love Riponlea and it would be a perfect setting.

  2. It was certainly entertaining and, naturally due to the nature of the material, titillating. A few laughs too!

I felt they were a little nervous (maybe just cold) as it was opening night and perhaps because they must have been told to start earlier than expected which can throw you.

  3. Lovely to find another Melbourne based blogger! Great dress.
