MSFW 2009 Launch

tend to agree with Melbourne’s Lord Mayor Robert Doyle when he said earlier today at a certain stylish launch that, “fashion and design are part of the heartbeat of our city”. At present I hope that extends to valuing our original building design and architecture as well but that is an argument for another article. Today we celebrate the upcoming 2009 Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (you may notice our new category above especially devoted to all things MSFW).

Exotic orchids from the Flower Temple lined the room at Untitled – usually a bar space above the wonderful Laurent bakery on Little Collins Street. The crowd lived up to the Melbourne stereotype dressing in chic black (admittedly so did I but at least I wore a blue coat) yet there seemed to be a breath of relief at the hot orange and pink tones on show – reflecting the creative images for MSFW 09 – that hinted at the impending sunny season. Outfits showcased while unveiling the face of spring fashion week were designed by some of our best contemporary designers; Easton Pearson, Nevenka (the sole Victorian representative today), Kirrily Johnston and Ginger & Smart.

And the face is…model Jess Hart.

Now based in New York, Jess will come home to Melbourne to be an ambassador for the week and as a special guest at the official launch party on Sunday August 30th. It is a true homecoming and she is also returning to the role – last playing the part in MSFW in 2005 when she was just emerging as a bright young modeling force.

With 36 parades and over 100 other events on schedule Melbourne Spring Fashion Week for 2009 kicks off in ONLY 26 DAYS! Ticket are on sale now.

I’ve poured through the 2009 MSFW schedule to bring you my hand-picked highlights of the week (away from the official runway). In no particular order;

Miss Green’s Garden Party – Sunday 6th, 12.30pm
Eco-friendly designers parade their one-off outfits for the racing season. Champagne, afternoon tea and the chance to bid for your favourite, original outfit also on offer.

Street: A Melbourne Street Fashion Exhibition – Monday 31st to Sunday 6th
MSF collaborates with Comeback Kid in this photographic exhibition of street style.

The Spirit of the Black Dress Gala – Sunday 30th, 6pm
Celebrating the classic little black dress with a new generation of designers; finalists include Andy Tsang, Alyana Eau, Airdrie Makim with Claire Djuve, Kristy Barber, Leigh Buchannon, Michelle Czech, Nikolina Kucan, Noelle Kan, Rachael Cassar and Sonya Kraan.

ELFE – Wednesday 2nd, 7pm
ELFE stands for Eco Luxe Fashion Event. Environmentally friendly yet luxurious labels in a market and catwalk parade with entertainment. One tree will be planted by Landcare Australia for every ticket sold. We’ll have a double pass to giveaway here soon.

Fashion at Altitude parades – Wednesday 2nd, 12.15pm & 1.15pm
The MGPO presents two different high-end designer parades set in the surrounds of the gorgeous heritage building. PS So I may be a little biased in picking this one since I’ll be  blogging about it on their official blog

High Fashion, High Tea – Saturday 5th, 3pm
Loved finishing my week off here in 2008. The Fashionising team pull together a dream line up of labels in this premium event at Silk Road. Features a stunning collective parade and afternoon tea.

The After Parties
Kick back at some of my favourite luxurious spots around town; Spice Market on Tuesday through Emerald Peacock, Red Hummingbird to Blue Diamond on Friday.
