Noir Desire Boutique

Lush new boutique Noir Desire has popped up recently in Prahran and is well worth a look, even if only to rest your feet at the halfway point of shopping mecca, Chapel Street. Owners Shweta and Sanjeev Arora drew the inspiration for their store and stock from the alluring glamour of India; so the design comes with a slight Bollywood feel. Their store officially opened in November 2008 and they describe the Noir Desire girl as “stylish, unique and glamourous” which is exactly what the stunning pieces reflect.

I was instantly drawn to a silk strapless mini dress, in classic LBD style, with a twist, and was told it was worn by Natalie Walker at the premier of Australian movie, Prey. With black sequin detailing on the bodice and a sculpted silhouette, this dress was truly made with a woman’s figure in mind. While it isn’t hard to dress the likes of glamazon Natalie Walker—the owners also took on Ben Kermode for the premiere, polishing him up for the night in a tailored tuxedo suit with a modern edge. Both pieces were designed by Rajat K Tangri. Take a peek at the red carpet images below.

The Boutique is an exclusive stockist of Rajat’s who springs from an RMIT Fashion background and is based in Melbourne. His designs reflect the feeling and atmosphere of the whole store. His line boasts amazingly unique frocks with, scalloped edges, beaded bodices, sequins, brocade, lace, keyhole detailing and quality finishings in brightly coloured silks and satins sourced from India and abroad. Some stand out pieces to stop traffic include a lipstick red mini dress with black beaded detailing on the bodice, asymmetrical shoulder strap with scalloped body con silk through the body and a tribal inspired full length balloon leg jumpsuit—one for the brave hearted and long legged.

Rajat’s designs are one off pieces which adds to their attraction, capturing both a formal wear market and young women who are searching for an internationally inspired, eye catching, unique piece that cannot be found anywhere else. Pieces can also be altered and tailor made to fit client’s bodies perfectly. This also includes a men’s suit line, of modernistic and distinctive suits with a glamorous edge, to match the girls of course. The suits include double lapelled collars in silks and satin, gloss fabrics and one suit is even white, however still in keeping with the classic cuts and style of a traditional suit.

Shweta has dressed anyone from high school girls to the over 50 year old women- who fall in love with the intricate detailing of her stock. Among others, Noir Desire also feature Indian designer, Princess Sitara- a very girly, spirited line of dresses and Amisha Khanna, an London based accessories designer whose pieces are stunningly intricate and distinctive– think beautiful chandelier earrings, large drop necklaces and cocktail rings that boast gems and stones sourced from India, some also with Swarovski crystals.

The boutique is a lusciously noteworthy addition to 290 Chapel Street, Prahran which can often lack the exclusive feel that Noir Desire advocates.

*Update* – there is now up to 50% off instore.
