Sportsgirl’s Summer ’08 Launch

The team at Sportsgirl certainly know how to make a photographer work for a shot. Their recent (and very exclusive) sneak peek preview of their upcoming summer range was an all-dancing spectacular of colour and movement. The models cum dancers on the signature coloured stripe catwalk were interspersed with performers from a variety of genres; breakers, ballroom, modern, jazz – even a fan dancer shimmied on stage.

‘So you think you can Dance’ finalists Jack Chambers and Kate Wormald stole the evening as stars of the show and showed great energy and chemistry when dancing together. This resulted in standing ovations and squeals of delighted laughter from the audience pretty much from start to finish. It was refreshing to see the ‘models’ as active women full of life rather than the static coathangers we are accustomed to. It fits in with the store’s clothing range, in that, these are outfits meant for living in not for standing passively around simply looking pretty.

The tongue-in-cheek parade was so entertaining it almost distracted from the fact we were indeed here to look at the clothes. As a chain store, one of the strengths of recent season’s at Sportsgirl is that it would be hard to pick the pieces as being from any particular store (with the exception of the return of the label’s nostalgic branded items). Instead the influences in its ranges are so varied that pieces meld into your wardrobe as if you’ve owned them for years. Indeed many of the items are vintage inspired or appear sourced from op-shops (handy for those who don’t have time to scour the cooler second hand stores).

The modern vintage, 80’s and 90’s -including the return of a little grunge- themes are still running strong here. Continuing with this idea, each unique piece in the large summer collection is, of course, not going to suit all tastes and I wouldn’t recommend wearing any one label from head to toe anyway – but there will most likely be one or two great individual stand out pieces in store that work with the wearers own style. For me the eye-catchers were Sportsgirl’s accessories this year; the bright strappy heels, bohemian-printed scarves, heart shaped belts and chunky bangles should get you through the next season and beyond.

A special shout out to the invitees who were mostly mangers and heads at the store…hunt these girls out next time you go shopping; they looked just as good (and comfortably so) as the actual show!
