Before Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 2010 becomes the festival du jour there is another event for design fans to hit our fair city. Presenting my short & sweet guide to the top ten best things (for fashion lovers) about the State of Design festival for 2010. In no particular order;

1. Preston Zly and The Red Shoes

Preston Zly hosts a screening of the 1948 Hans Christian Andersen flick ‘The Red Shoes’. A pair of Leona Edmiston ‘Pins’ stockings will be gifted to all those that attend.

2. Lace by Design

MATERIALBYPRODUCT presents Scene Two, a performance piece that examines the loveliness of lace.

3. Melbourne Charm School

No, it’s not a place to learn which fork to use with your seafood entree or how to properley address a Duke. Melbourne Charm School allows you to create your own jewellery charm while considering its intended purpose and recipient.

4. Look.Stop.Shop.

A wander through the city to find the special windows and installations that have been set up for this event. Includes names like Alice Euphemia, Alpha60, bul, Captains of Industry, Comeback Kid, Fat, Gorman, S!x, Smitten Kitten, Swensk, Trimapee and Somewhere.

5. IndiENVELOPE

Printmaker Nadia Maini-Craig and fashion designer Anthea van Kopplen invite people aged 13-20 to join them for a two day session by the Yarra to create their own garment.

6. Dirty Puppet at the Signet Bureau

Animator Cameron Gough of Dirty Puppet tells the story of The Signet Bureau designers – shoemaker Preston Zly and label munk – through his own medium.

7. Counter Point

A retail and art installation collaboration between The Social Studio and RMIT’s Industrial and Interior Design students including a fashion show on launch night.

8. Curating Desire

A discussion on how Melbourne’s retail landscape has changed through design. Part of the State Library of Victoria’s til you drop: Shopping – a Melbourne history exhibition.

9. Design : Made : Trade

This trade focused fair is also fascinating for we regular folks with an eye for good design. Visit all kinds of designers, including those who chose to work with fashion and jewellery, like locals Blue Dog Glass, Dani M designs, Drink Me Alice and their brilliant new Drown range, Kearnsie Manufacture and Design, KYOKO OSATO, Leoni & Vonk, Marlee May, MüCKE, RMIT University’s School of Fashion & Textiles, The Gently Unfurling Sneak, Tiffany Treloar and Gretchen Hillhouse Design.

10. And number 10 is that I will soon be giving away five double passes to Design:Made:Trade!

There are so many delicious bargains to be had at the moment and they will continue well into 2010. I thought I’d share a select few that I think are really worth a look. Just remember that if a piece is not well made or you don’t feel fabulous in it, it is not really a bargain at all.

<insert name here> – The collaborative pop-up shop in Georges on Collins (195 Little Collins Street) will disappear in the new year so there’s only a few days to go. Find beautifully unique dresses, original handmade jewellery and even some kitschy car tees for the men in your life.

Lady Petrova – In my opinion, hands down the best place in the city to find a party dress for New Year’s Eve. Discover 20 – 80% off summer stock from the like of Lady Petrova herself, MyPetSquare, Tristan Blair, Mink Pink and Tahlulah. Find the lady at 237 Flinders Lane (down Scott Alley).

MLY – For those that don’t want to/can’t leave the house due to chronic overindulgence of mince pies and eggnog this season Miss Lyndel Yeo has a summer sale online now.

Swensk – I love slow fashion so naturally I love the Swedish style at Swensk. Their men’s range is at 230 Little Collins Street and women should visit their temporary satellite store on level one of Melbourne’s GPO. 20 – 60% off should help you keep your wardrobe stylish yet simple this coming year.

Plus I’ve left details of plenty more sales at Melbourne’s GPO here. If you have found or are hosting a wonderful fashion sale in Melbourne please feel free to share and leave details in the comment below.

PS Please remind me to never attempt a trip to Chadstone on Boxing Day again (first sales outing for that day and never ever again). Or, if I succumb to sales madness and try, you have permission to tie me to a chair until the New Year.

So the good old term “sunnies” has fallen by the wayside for the more upmarket sounding “eyewear”. Sunglasses themselves have skyrocketed in prestige and price in recent years, while finding that perfect pair that suits both your features and personality is akin to finding the holy grail. Here’s some inspiration for your next eyewear hunt – we’ve decided to go old school to find a unique style;

1. Swensk boutique on Little Collins is into “slow fashion”. As an aficionado of the “slow food” movement I’m guessing many of the ideals are the same (ie. timeless classics are in as is an appreciation of both the simple and fine things in life). They’ve just shipped over a private collection of 70s and 80’s Nina Ricci, Dunhill & Lacoste sunglasses from Swedish optometrist Gustav Levin – I sense an optical obsession. These are now one-of-a-kind true vintage frames that have been updated with state of the art lenses. My pick are these black and gold rimmed Christian Dior pair in amber for $749. swensk.com.au

2. Or how about some baby blue shades to shelter your own baby blues? This pair of hand painted floral frames brings back waves of nostalgia for younger days lazily spent lying the grass. For just $34.95 from Dorothy and Evelyn they are an budget friendly way to take a trip back in time. dorothyandevelyn.com

3. Not true vintage but a faithful reproduction are these leopard print sunnies from Polaroid. When I first laid eyes on these I had a bit of Jackie O/Kennedy moment. Dramatic yet classic these can be pulled out from your drawer years down the track and still look fresh so maybe these should become your newest old faithfuls? polaroideyewear.com.au
