Style etc…Joolz ‘Third Time’s the Charm’ Collection

'Lady Luck' vintage recycled dice with handcut jet crystal

Joolz Designer Airdrie Makim is currently frantically making up 100 pieces for a special event in L.A. However this has just come of the back of the completion of her latest jewellery collection entitled ‘Third Time’s the Charm’. The collection heavily features vintage playing cards cut into perching butterflies and recycled dice. You can even have items sourced from the famous Vegas casinos such as Caesar’s Palace, Casino Royale and the Bellagio (made famous by the Ocean’s 11 films) included in your own commissions. Style etc…Christopher Moore Photography Series

chris moore projectPhotographer Christopher Moore recently collaborated with talented local designers, models and makeup artists to create a series of images that show off gorgeous girls, covetable clothing and even our fair city has a cameo. And we have a peek for StyleMelbourne readers.

The first series tells the fractured fairytale of a fated Melbourne girl being watched over (or is that stalked?) by a guardian-type angel. The subtle inclusion of the photographer himself makes this somewhat of a self portrait. In one Jason Grech drapes model Jessica Judd in a slinky silver number. The final portrait sees Aussie label Antonia Paris (I’m still prepared to kill for their black sequined off-the-shoulder number) appear with a frilled number to die for, literally according to the image.

In the next series model Stephanie is directed into a series of strong shapes. Read More…

Style Etc…5 Minutes With Sarah Schofield

sarahsmderby1.jpgAfter a whirlwind Spring Racing carnival, RMIT Fashion Student and Myer Fashions on the Field winner Miss Sarah Schofield agreed to have a quick chat with me about this years’ carnival hits, misses, and what inspired her winning outfit.

Who designed your outfits for this years Spring Racing Carnival?

I designed almost all of my own outfits for this year’s carnival.  I wore one of my own designs from my fourth year collection to the Caulfield Cup, and I wore headwear by Richard Nylon.  He has been a true mentor to me, since I took his Millinery class at RMIT.

For Cox Plate Day, I wore a vintage frock that I picked up in Paris last year, and I made a hat to go with the dress out of balsa wood fans. Read More…

Style etc…Introducing Jaakan

jaakan photo shootStyleMelbourne was recently invited to take a behind the scenes look at Jakaan’s latest photo shoot and indeed peek at their new threads (see right). We liked what we saw. The guerrilla style shoot (complete with bemused passers by) was a mission through the locale of St Kilda which gets to the heart of the Jaakan ideal – playfulness, individuality and being a little bit cheeky. The designer is Melbournian Pippa Joseph who has been creating for seven years and opened up the Jaakan boutique on Greville Street in Prahran in 2004. A second store named Fanny’z opened up just this past Spring on Chapel Street in Windsor and has quickly become a venue that melds designer retail with fashion events. New stock arrives all the time

The Jaakan range is typically girly without the chance that it will give you a toothache. At the shoot we spotted quirky high-waisted shorts, flirty mini skirts (ink-hued with a flash of fuschia) and basic scoop backed tees (already on our lust list). Read More…

Style etc…An interview with Dom Bagnato

DB8-9.jpgFresh from Fashions on the Field judging duties at the Flemington Spring Racing Carnival we roped in Melbourne tailor/suit designer Dom Bagnato to check on his tips for on and off the track.

Q. I feel like the average male is finally starting to take a few risks with their fashion and the Spring Racing Carnival gives them good license to explore their creative side more when it comes to dressing. Are there any trends or classic styles you’d like to see more of this year?

Dom: The trend that I would love to see is the continuation of light shades in suits, eg naturals, silver with colour and mid greys and blues , shirts colour, colour, colour! And related ties in stripes, motives and textures. Read More…
