Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia 2014

Alice McCall MBFWA

This week I’ll be condensing some of the highlight MBFWA catwalk presentations down into bite-sized pieces for New York based publication The Fashion Spot. So if you’re sans time or trying to see the runways incognito from your desk, tune in here. The show list will be updated as we

The Golden Slipper

Imagining I’m on a Roman holiday today. Preferably wearing these Hepburn-esque gold ballet flats, crafted in Italy exclusively for new Melbourne label Ballettonet. Somebody pass the Campari please.

Running with Scissors | Gavin Brown | Art x Fashion

Aren’t these collages constructed from paste, paper and paint by Melbourne artist Gavin Brown transfixing? They are part of his ‘Running with Scissors’ series recently exhibited at Rtist gallery. Known predominantly as a painter Gavin explains that “collage has long been the basis for most of my work and I tend to derive my source

First Look | Gorman | Winter 2014

For a collection titled ‘Never Smile at a Crocodile’ it’s surprising that my favourite prints from Gorman‘s Winter 2014 offering aren’t those featuring el cocodrilo (adorable as he is on a frilly dress). Instead I’ve fallen for prickly blossoming cactus motifs and a graphic, surrealist key hole print. I would also like

From enormous teddy bears to optical illusions to kinetic movement to mementos; inspirations for the collections included in the National Graduate Showcase at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival are always vast and varied. Last night the nation’s slightly under-the-radar labels took back some of the spotlight at the Independent Runway for the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival. Tiffany & Co National Designer Award nominee Christina Exie and last year’s victors From Britten took to the catwalk alongside designs from Emma Mulholland, Kathryn Beker, Neo

Camilla’s Grand Showcase | Melbourne Fashion Festival | 2014

VAMFF 2014

Perched cosily on the designer’s own embellished pillows we watched as Camilla Franks took her turn to star in the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival’s Grand Showcase. The orchestral sounds of a live symphony made a moody backdrop as the ‘And God Created Woman’ collection marched down the catwalk adorning feathered

The final official Runway at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival had me dancing in my seat (it was a Friday night after all). Alice McCall’s comic book prints packed the intended punch, Limedrop‘s range went from sweet to plastic fantastic and we welcomed Sydney label Macgraw to the VAMFF

Runway 6 | Melbourne Fashion Festival | 2014

Runway 6-24

Runway 6 got arty at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival last night. Ellery’s collection incorporated abstract art prints and tapestries by Ben Barretto. Meanwhile Yeojin Bae’s curvy panelling reminded me of the marbled paintings of childhood. Runway 6 also featured the leading labels Alex Perry, Arthur Galan AG, Carla Zampatti, Lui Hon
