Begone Antarctic Vortices (yes, I had to Google the plural for ‘vortex’). Sunshiny days are but seven weeks away, and with them comes Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. I’ve already revealed the essentials of MSFW 2015 over at The Urban List so below are the events I think may spark your interest as our homegrown fashion week enters its 21st year:
Emerging RMIT Runway – Sunday 30th August, 6.30pm
This graduate fashion designer runway is creative, exuberant and often unwearable. But it’s always entertaining.
Emporium Runway – Friday 28th August, 6.30pm
A city laneway becomes an urban catwalk profuse with flora and foliage. Retailer Emporium has the chops to hire some of our most talented stylists and the in-house Aussie designer line-up to make this one something special – let’s hope they use them.
Emerging Designer Market – Saturday 30th August, from 10am
Tired of the Melburnian cool girl “uniform”? Here’s where to source a few pieces hardly anyone else will be wearing. Plus, if we don’t support our own up-and-comers who will?
Vogue Fashion’s Night Out @ Shop the City – Friday 28th to Sunday 30th August, from 5pm
Melbourne gets treated to its first Vogue VIP shopping night (amid a weekend long CBD shop-a-thon). Rather than focusing on sales, the opening event promotes creative happenings, fashion and celebrity appearances and retail therapy treats.
Fred Hates Fashion – Saturday 29th August, 7.30pm
A youthful, underground fashion crowd flocks to see inventive films, independent runways and have a bit of a party basically.
Customised Tank Top Workshop – Wednesday 2nd September, 6pm
BYO tank. DIY fashion. This could be very cute! Thread Den teaches customisation via screen printing, studding and textile markers.
Masterclass: Fashion Photography – Sunday 30th August, from 10am
Pro fashion photographer Ed Purnomo (check out his work here) will guide you through tips and tricks with professional models and stylists on hand. Would love to try my (sadly uber untalented) hand this one!
Behind the Scenes: In the NGV Collection – Friday 28th August, 2pm
Treasures will be found here. Go behind the seams of the National Gallery’s hidden fashion and textile collection.
Victoriana, In the Pleasure Garden – Saturday 29th August, 6pm
Victoriana. Pleasure. Garden. Dig out your very best promenading outfit for this garden party and photographic exhibition.
Opening Gala Runway – Tuesday 1st September, 7pm
If you want to ooh and ahh over a runway show like you are in Paris, London or New York this is the one. With 11 glamorous Australian labels the gala-inspired show is set to be the biggest and most beauteous of fashion week.
