Alto (meaning a musical high in Italian) is a secret events space capping off the GPO Building – which many now know predominantly as home to H&M – in the heart of the city. Operated by Damm Fine Foods (who have ruined me forevermore from eating ungilded risotto), Alto has recently had an interior overhaul courtesy of Kate Hannaford at Moth Design, whose portfolio you may be familiar with from Penthouse Mouse, Melbourne Spring Fashion Week and Ponyfish Island.
The immersive, somewhat voyeuristic city views remain, but the design now touches on interior trends du jour. The deployment of metallic-of-the-moment brass has adding a warm lustre and vintage appeal. The gleaming bar and optional old-school whiskey trolley make for subtle focal points in the room. Diffusion of light is key via transparent bar stools, lazer-cut clear perspex chandeliers and glass jar pendants. Champagne and dove grey furnishings complete the industrial but also somehow welcomingly homely look. Alto is once again ripe for magazine launches and fashion presentations with a transformable aesthetic that doesn’t impose its character on an event, unless you want it to.
