60+ Wonderful Last Minute Hats for the Races

Melbourne Cup Day: Biretta and Busby

I’ve always been an advocate for wearing a proper hat (or substantial headpiece at least) to the races or whenever you feel you can get away with it. But this year I’ve truly fallen in love with the idea. You honestly feel more grand while wearing a millinery creation; it just takes a little leap of faith for sceptics to try a few on. This season I’m a little bit over the traditional feathers and flowers. Instead opt for fresh materials like metal and leather, sculptural structure, veils, pieces with a sense of humour or the avant garde where possible. Here’s a few of my favourite hats, headpieces and fascinators from just a few of the most talented milliners in Australia (plus a few pieces from purse-friendly labels) with an eye towards the Melbourne Cup Carnival for any personal styles. I hope they provide you with last minute Spring Racing Carnival outfit inspiration; if you find a perfect piece, simply scroll to the end for links to get in touch with all of the milliners.
