It has been a bit of tumultuous time for couture designer Jason Grech of late. When creating the current ‘Birds of Prey’ range he reveals “I was in a dark sort of place, it’s not my old, bright, cheery, collection.” In the designer’s own words the collection is “majestic, a little bit evil. It’s really about things that can kill. I found that it gave me a bit of power.”

Kicking off the official runway series at MSFW and being invited to create a gown for model face Elodie Russell to wear in the, now familiar, hero image of Fashion Week’s campaign have been bright spots for Jason though; “It gave me focus…they gave us a story board, the colours were very Melbourne in the hard and the soft – like concrete¬†and Spring flowers…then it took me about two weeks to make”.

He also found collaboration with Melbourne’s resident (not-so-)mad hatter Richard Nylon for the campaign and the catwalk invigorating. “It’s the first time I’ve worked with Richard – he’s such a nice person – I basically gave him creative control and then we chatted about what was working and what wasn’t, touching base every few days. I love them [the headpieces]!”

Post-show it’s time for balancing much-needed sleep with Jason’s attendance at all of the other designer runways this week (“I think it’s good to support our peers”), before he even starts considering his entry for the upcoming Fashions on the Field Designer Award.

Jasongrech‘s collection opened the gothic fairytale-like Runway 1, full of intricate keys trailing from dreamy braids and gilded eyes. Other labels on the catwalk were Aurelio Costarella, Nicolangela, Michael Lo Sordo, Carla Zampatti, Dom Bagnato, Gwendolynne, Richard Nylon, Olivia Schwarz and Anaessia.
