Advanced Style

Last night I encountered ‘Advanced Style’. The film, based on Ari Seth Cohen’s famously ground-breaking blog of the same name, is eye-opening, refreshing and full of warm moments as it explores fashion for the 50+ set.

It was wonderful to gain an insight into these seven uniquely stylish characters’ New York lives on screen. Finally they have a voice in addition to a recognisable aesthetic (as well as not being seen, older people – women in particular – are often not heard).

Their joy and personalities shine through their outfits whether they are wearing Chanel and Lanvin or pieces more kooky (ever thought of using toilet roll holders as a base for DIY cuffs? One lady cuts her own hair for perfectly co-coordinated mega-lashes). As well as observing the characters being tentatively accepted into the glitzy fashion world, mostly due to the blog’s infamy, the film also features cameos by Tavi Gevinson, The Sartorialist and Iris Apfel in a more substantial role. I’m breaking out my turquoise eyeliner asap.

Madman Entertainment love you as much as I do. They’ve given me 5 double passes so that a lucky handful of you can see the documentary from October 2nd in cinemas:

1. Either follow @StyleMelbourne on Instagram OR subscribe to our occasional newsletter (you’ll find the subscribe box in the left hand sidebar) if you haven’t already.

2. Email win@stylemelbourne.com with subject line ‘advanced’ plus your full name and postal address. I’ll never share the details.

3. Wait to see if you’ve won this gorgeous prize. Competition drawn Sep 30.
