The Parisian-inspired emporium that is the Royal Arcade’s Marais is welcoming a little sister. Marais mark II is being touted as nothing less than “a portal into a mythical space”, taking up residence soon within a 19th century building on what we might now call the Paris end of Bourke Street.
The architects and interior designers are bringing some serious gloss; a two-tonne chandelier features 8,400 glimmering crystals, smoked mirrors, reflection and crystal motifs seem to cover every available surface, while the metallic entrance has been given a “beetle-like” lustre.
Take the grand spiral marble staircase to the first first to take a turn for the medieval. Expect homages to knights, chain-mail and even drawbridges here. I hear the lingerie department will be swathed in enough sea-shell pink to make Botticelli’s Venus swoon.
Anticipate going through the looking glass with the likes of Rick Owens, Celine, Balenciaga and Givenchy when Marais the second opens in early June.
