MSFW 2013 | Beauty Preview

How many cans of hairspray must Kevin Murphy have gone through? 2013 marks his 10 year anniversary directing the hair looks at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. Alongside make-up maestro Kenneth Higgins of Mecca, Kevin is charged with making MSFW all the more beautiful.

This year Mecca Maxima is looking after designer runways and Mecca Cosmetica is working the shows at The Hub; they will be utilising  a stable of beauty product from the likes of Stila, Kit and I suspect a whole lot of Nars. In a preview of just a couple of looks (we don’t want to spoil all the surprises) that will hit the runway, Kenneth showcased a “gritty but pretty” look for eyes made of metallic foil-spiked gel by Stila and melting black pencil, tuxedo-esque nail adhesives from Mecca and an astonishing couture-inspired jewelled eye-line by Kit. I swear by nail decals; maybe we’ll soon be converts to eye decals too?

Meanwhile Kevin’s hair direction veers from 50’s meets punk cropped blonde wigs (“when you see the girls en masse they’ll look like robots”) accented with metal clips to a piece-y, exaggerated straight blow-dry inspired by the spear lily. For the latter look, which Kevin says has “echoes of grunge”, the hair should move and bristle like reeds as models strut down the catwalk.

17 days to go!
