The Essentials of MSFW 2013

Models Emily Macfarlane, Natalia Kalinowski & Olivia Langdon launch the MSFW 2013 program

Once upon a time, way back in the early naughties, I attended my very first Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. This year marks my 10th MSFW! It’s been one heady decade of caffeine, coiffure and champagne since. And killer deadlines. With one month to go, Spring will soon be in the air. Here’s the definitive list of MSFW events that Melbourne shouldn’t miss come fashion week’s return…

– This year MSFW experiments with a slice of swim. Their first ever resort show should showcase a haze of beach bunnies and a swathe of kaftans and jewelled sandals. And it should leave us all fantasizing about owning a fancy yacht on which to wear them.

– Fashion Week goes masculine with a night dedicated to the gentlemanly aesthetic.  MSFW Mr. will include runway shows, entertainment and tips. Plus mandatory beer and cider.

– What could make a beautiful new book on fashionable cocktails better? Sipping those cocktails in real life. Book launches have never been so chic (or soused).

– Closets full but nothing to wear? Everybody looks the same? You’ve got no excuse to skip shopping at the new designer market.

– You know I always adore a glimpse into the future at the student designer runway shows.

– ACMI’s fashion on film line-up always transports viewers to another time, city or mindframe. This year it’s dedicated to bold, brash British style icons.

– But if you can only see one make sure to catch a screening of the official fashion film of MSFW; ‘Reflections’. I’m biased with this selection; as lots of lovely industry people (and even moi) make cameos.

– Nail Art is still very much a thing. Miss Fox can show you how.

– My fellow voyeurs can take a peek inside the closets of prominent Melbourne women as the NGV tells us stories behind special pieces.
