Kate Moss smoking on the catwalk for Louis Vuitton caused consternation. So? Melbourne did it decades beforehand without so much as a batted (false) eyelash!
An old 90’s documentary on 80’s fashion and the Fashion Design Council of Australia popped up on my radar recently. The films here speak to a time when art, craft and fashion merged; when having fun was favoured over professionalism. There’s plenty of familiar faces, fantastic clothes and rebellious spirits. It was an era where emerging fashion collections (including those of a young Martin Grant and Morrissey Edmiston) were shown on Countdown against a Ghostbusters soundtrack (yeah they did). Also a fine example of hairspray abuse and terrible camerawork. It’s intriguing to see how much has changed and how much has stayed the same over the past 20-30 years. I could definitely envision a few incarnations of these designs on our graduate runways today.
In the lead up to Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, pour yourself a big glass of wine and settle in with a slice of retro deliciousness this weekend.
