Crabtree & Evelyn open in the Block Arcade

British label Crabtree & Evelyn have officially cut the ribbon on their new boutique amid the historic Block Arcade. Housed underneath the glorious hand-painted fresco of the original Singer sewing machine company that once occupied the space, the store is brimming with life’s little luxuries, many infused with fruit and floral essences. Happily surrounded by the Hopetoun Tea Rooms, spice merchant Gewürzhaus and the French Jewel Box, the new Crabtree and Evelyn boutique offers some surprisingly modern formulations. Creams, soap and candles incorporate the likes of avocado, black sea mud, West Indian lime and green bamboo alongside the classic lilies and roses of yore.

Reading up on the company’s history I’m now inspired to install a “still room”; a traditional English space in which flowers, herbs and other delights from the garden were distilled into water for bathing and skin tonics. This apothecarian idea still remains as part of Crabtree & Evelyn’s spirit. First I’ll need to acquire a proper manor on the moors in which house my still room. And likely a gardener.

Maybe I should just lather up with some of their almond milk and honey soap and inhale deeply instead?
