The Spirit of the Black Dress 2013

The culmination of a five year project, The Spirit of the Black Dress came to its finale this fashion festival. Espousing thoughtful, eco-friendly-but-no-less style-concious designs, TSOTBD transformed into grander scale in 2013; showcasing capsule collections by the chosen designers, a tribute to past finalist (the now Project Runway winning) Christina Exie as well as the spirited black dresses themselves. One of the first ethical fashion events to take part in the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, TSOTBD has paved the way for  a broader eco program at LMFF, was nominated for a Melbourne award for its contribution to sustainability, been frequented by respected labels like Limedrop, Sosume, Lisa Taranto, Exie, LMFF 2013 Designer Award nominee Kathryn Beker, and has produced a series of captivating films and images.

Photographed in editorial style by Andrew O’Toole, an exhibition of the gowns can be seen from tomorrow until 1st April 2013 at the Intercontinental Melbourne the Rialto, 495 Collins Street, Melbourne.
