New York City Style exhibition with Sex & the City stylist Patricia Field

Stylist and costume designer Patricia Field has scoured private archives across the globe (Italy, France, London) to bring pieces from Sex & The City to Melbourne for the New York City Style fashion exhibition. “I tried to get the J’Adore Dior little tee-shirt. No where to be found.”

“The best part of my job is what I’m doing right now and that’s due to the success of Sex & The City,” enthuses Field in her gravelly New Yorker tones. “I cultivated an audience of women all over the world, I could speak to them through clothes. Nothing thrills me more than when I’m walking down the road – be it in Tokyo or Dubai – and they’ll say “Patricia Field?” and we’ll talk and we’re friends.”

The costumes themselves are well travelled too, having actually been worn by Carrie and Co. in Paris, New York – natch – and Abu Dhabi (yes the maligned movie sequel gets a looks in; after all wasn’t that fashion the only redeeming part?). I hear the public liability insurance required to host the collection is astronomical (security is high; don’t even think about vaulting the barricades to snatch Charlotte’s daughter’s cupcake purse). There’s Oscar De La Renta, Versace, Halston, Ferragamo and vintage designs in the mix alongside the holy trinity of shoemakers; Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo. Some outfits I would go as far to say are iconic.

However “we’re not selling fashion, we’re telling stories” explains Field.

Be inspired to tell your own story through your dress. Visit the New York City Style exhibition; on now until Sunday March 31st in the luxury precinct at Chadstone, 1341 Dandenong Road, Chadstone.
