LMFF 2013 Opening event with David Jones

Reigning queen of prints and ‘It’ girl of the fashion design world, it’s a pleasure to discover Mary Katrantzou is just really damn lovely. From the minute you meet her she’s all smiles and openness  and I get the sense she was genuinely happy to visit our faraway fashion capital of Melbourne for David Jones and LMFF. Then again the London/Greek designer hasn’t got much to be unhappy about. Her biggest concern of the moment? “Growing pains. It’s grown so rapidly, just recruiting and building a loyal team and making sure everyone is motivated because they are worked really hard… those are the things that keep me awake at night.”

She didn’t have time to luxuriate in Melbourne either, soon after set to jet to Sydney, London and then the U.S. for shows, “ I’ve only just gotten a feel for the city,” explained Mary. Though she did get at least one moment to rest – seated front row – as her designs took a starring role in David Jones’ Autumn/Winter presentation at the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. “It was great. I never get to sit down and have the privilege to watch a show. I’ve never watched one of our shows; I’m always backstage!”

“ We’ve realised there’s a lot more awareness here of my work here than we thought, I’m not sure if that’s the Greek population or if David Jones are just doing a really good job promoting it. There’s also an appreciation of colour and print here just judging by how I saw a lot of women dress for the show.”

I hear during her visit Mary got chatting to our own print-savvy designer Camilla Franks and she also cites “Josh Goot, Collette Dinnigan and Camilla & Marc” as representative of Australian labels whose “use of texture, colour and ease of silhouettes was really, really smart.”

That very morning the designer scooped up a pair of sparkling pink earrings to take home. So her answer comes as little surprise when I enquire as to “her own personal fashion weakness?” “Oh god, big jewels! I love Miu Miu jewellery.”
