Independent Runway at LMFF 2013

Kathryn Beker, Neo Dia, Jolet, Fame Agenda; there’s so many talented (and just darn buyable if you can find them) independent designers around town at the moment. Livia Arena is another favourite of mine. And it seems I won’t get much argument from the smart cookies at LMFF as her burgeoning label was nominated for LMFF’s National Designer Award this year. The experience Livia describes as “both terrifying and lots of fun.”

“It’s also just been so reassuring to have professional recognition of my work, and it’s definitely going to help me to keep raising the bar for future seasons. Hopefully you’ll see me back in the line up next year!”

Livia’s collection as seen on the Independent runway at the festival was inspired by the Ruben’s Vase paradigm, light waves and a colour palette drawn from infra-red photography. “Basically, I wanted to focus on the idea that we choose how we interpret an object or figure, whether we look at it as a whole, or sum of its parts, and how light can influence how we see things,” explains the cerebral young designer. I’m currently swooning over her let-the-light-shine-through custom-cut Italian leather skirt, relaxed woollen trench coats and unusual cut-out hem and necklines.

While I can’t wait for her next Spring/Summer collection but for now at least Livia’s thoughts turn to travel with jaunts to Sydney, China, Jordan, Qatar and Sicily in the works. “It will be the first set of holidays I’ve had since starting the label!”

Livia Arena‘s designs featured in the Independent  Runway at the 2013 L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. The show also featured designer labels From Britten, ksubi, Pageant, Strateas Carlucci, Garth Cook, Livia Arena, One Fell Swoop, Tettmann.Doust, Trois and Zhivago. Listen to the show’s music playlist here.
