Lookbook: Kuwaii ‘Regalia’ A/W 2013

With the impending arrival of Will and Kate’s progeny and Naomi Watts’ Princess Diana movie (both due in a few months) it’s probable gossip mag readers’ fascination with the monarchy will return with a vengence this year. Timely then that Kristy Barber’s latest Kuwaii collection ‘Regalia’ takes royalty as it’s starting point.

The connection to monarchy is not immediately obvious; typically when thinking of regal-inspired fashion I expect jewel tones, velvet and silks with perhaps a touch of Edwardian era. Kuwaii has a very specific version of royalty in mind; an off-duty contemporary (perhaps late 80’s, early 90’s) woman, tramping the grounds of some mist-frosted highlands estate. When you think of Kuwaii’s present muse Lady Di in this setting the link suddenly becomes clear. The colour palate includes icing pink, dove grey and lavender, hues of a wintry English countryside and its flora, and lemon yellow, a colour which Diana (and every royal up to the Queen Mum) wore often.

It’s a laid back – but not too laid-back; the paparazzi might be lurking – weekend uniform of sweaters, loafers and slacks. The collection features block colours unadorned by crown jewels in an aversion to the ostentatious (restrained, just as Diana was when she was still an official royal). There’s even a nod to tweed. Wear these Kuwaii pieces and you’ll be ready for a spot of Devonshire tea and/or to release the hounds. I’d just add pearls. And a tiara if you’ve got one handy.
