Lookbook: Jolet A/W 2013

On my desk, framed in silver, sits a photograph taken of a metropolitan skyline at night snapped while on a holiday to Japan. Its twinkling skyscraper lights are blurred but I love the abstractedness. The photograph is still unmistakably Tokyo.

So when I spied Jolet‘s Autumn Winter 2013 collection I didn’t need to read the notes to immediately be transported back to this glittering city. The hero digital print for the upcoming season is indeed called ‘Tokyo Lights’. It was developed from a photograph designer Jolet Ucchino took while on a Japanese jaunt last year, “I was so taken by Tokyo, a city so alive, full of people and buzzing with lights. The culture there that’s so rich in tradition and yet is on the leading edge of technology. I really wanted to capture this vibe in the collection. “

I adore this range; filled with well-placed cut-aways, heavy beading and that cosmopolitan print in winterised wool, silk and cotton sateen. As fond as I am of the collection, Jolet found many things about the country to be just as inspiring. She took note of, “clean cut tailoring to crazy Harajuku style…the Golden Gai in Shinjuku, a small area composed of six narrow alleys and contains over 200 tiny little bars and eateries that survived the war and earthquakes over the years. So beautiful” and “considerate, orderly and super polite people!”

What’s your favourite thing about Jolet’s A/W collection? Would also love to hear, if you’ve been lucky to visit, about your Japan stories?
