Dior & Yamamoto: The New Look

At first glance designers Christian Dior and Yohji Yamamoto have little in common. The first is remembered for his ultra-feminine styles, the latter for unfinished, avant garde designs. However both transformed womens’ silhouettes; Dior’s legacy is the cinched-waist, full skirted, hourglass “New Look” of the late 40’s and Yamamoto’s broke shape rules with his abstract debut in the 80’s.

The National Gallery of Victoria is hosting an exhibition which contrasts these two designers by featuring a handful of the designers’ real life pieces alongside photographs and sketches. It opens on Saturday March 16th and runs until Sunday July 28th from 10am-5pm at NGV, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne.
