Fame Agenda ‘Donkey Skin’ Resort 2013

Released in Indonesia last year, Melbourne label Fame Agenda‘s ‘Donkey Skin’ range is soon to be released here as a resort collection. The unusual title refers to the English translation of Peau d’Âne; a 1600’s fairy tale written by French wordsmith Charles Perrault. The tale is like a twisted, potentially incestuous, pre-Cinderella story and was made into a movie musical staring Catherine Denevue in the 70’s. This story forms the inspiration for the range alongside another fairytale, this time the Russian Sadko which focusses on underwater worlds and Neptune-esque royalty

Designers Monica Lim and Holly Chandra have taken on this folkloric idea to create piece that could be illustrations from Brothers Grimm fables. Reference to their chosen fairytales are seen in metallic embroidered celestial bodies and jewel-encrusted oceanic prints. I also see a hint of Greecian mythology in the delicate wings employed as sleeves that to me are reminiscent of Icarus. Never thought the day would come when I would covet goldfish emblazoned pants. Fame Agenda has proved me wrong.

To support the collection the label has commissioned several off-beat, mixed-media works by Melbourne artist Louis Kanzo. You’ll see them scattered throughout the lookbook below.

Fame Agenda‘s Donkey Skin is due in stores mid-February. Do you have a favourite piece? Let me know in the comments below…
