When an invitation includes the words “gold penthouse” how can one resist? When it also contains the term ‘J’Aton’ instant r.s.v.p’s can be assured.
In celebration of the Como Melbourne‘s recent rejuvenation (and its prime-for-retail-therapy locale), the hotel issued a challenge along with an invitation to myself, Jasmin from Friend in Fashion, Jess from What Would Karl Do and Micah and Jesse from Raww. Could we put together an entire outfit suitable for dinner with the designers from J’Aton, in under 2.5 hours, on budget and only shopping within the Chapel Street precinct? They didn’t mention the challenge would be completed in 38 degree heat (not that I would ever object to shopping with someone else’s money).
I also had an extra element to contend with as my pledge to only buy Australian brands for a year continues. Even though it was a rush it surprisingly wasn’t too hard to select pieces from only Melbourne labels along Chapel Street. Then it was back to the Como to be beautified by the wonderful Miss Fox team and create a mini-fashion shoot in the aforementioned gold penthouse with photographer Amanda Fordyce. And to meet J’Aton’s Jacob Luppino and Anthony Pittorino over champagne (the gents are lovely and friendly by the way, even though they dress everyone who’s anyone). My job can be pretty surreal at times.
I’m not brilliant at shopping under pressure but I hope you approve of my choices below. I was going for a 1960′s Elizabeth Taylor-esque look in oceanic colours (perhaps the influence of the heat on the day).
