Flying in from her Los Angeles base, Australian model Jessica Gomes was in Melbourne for breakfast with Mimco, fashion bloggers and me this morning. As the face of the accessories label’s ‘Kaleidoscopic Cinematopia’ collection, Jessica features in their latest campaign. Shot in the desert oasis of Palm Springs, the model is no stranger to the location frequenting Coachella and she is apparently quite “a fan of the We Care detox retreat there”. The chance to work with Australian cinematographer Mandy Walker (Red Riding Hood, Australia and Lantana) and Melbourne photographer James Geer (who has photographed faces like Kimbra, Rose Byrne and Abbey Lee Kershaw) must have been a happy bonus.
Considering the occasion I enquired about Jessica’s most memorable breakfast experience; “Breakfast in Melbourne is good with the city’s cafe culture… but waking up at the Ritz in Paris and having champagne, berries, croissants and coffee is up there.” The French memory is appropriate considering the first series Mimco has released this season focuses around a – fictional but possible – lunch meeting between artist Pablo Picasso and designer Coco Chanel in 1920’s Paris. Picasso’s late cubist period is typified by block primary colours clashing with the muted, ladylike palette of Chanel.
As a whole the ‘Kaleidoscope Cinematopia’ collection epitomises “optimistic sophistication” and spans from the aforementioned 1920’s through to the 60’s. The next release is ‘Glam Tycoon’ inspired by 1956 movie ‘Giant’ starring James Dean, Rock Hudson and iconic-jewellery collector Elizabeth Taylor. This will be followed up by the ‘Rat Pack Affair’ featuring laser cut leather, beads, crystals and pastels.
What’s next for Jessica? She’ll be travelling “up to Sydney to shoot with InStyle magazine for a Mimco editorial…then onto Miami Swim Fashion Week. I’ve just done an unbelievable underwater shoot…my first… for a cover about that”.
