Having recently returned from Hawaii, I blame familiarity with the label ‘Kuwaii‘ for my utter inability to spell the locale ‘Kauai’ the whole time I was there (thank you Google). The mai tais may not have helped either.
Happily Kawaii designer Kirsty Barber made it up to me with a little sneak peek of her upcoming Spring Summer collection. Titled ‘Landscape’, the collection is derived from a photograph of Queensland’s terrain that she stumbled upon on in a dusty old library book from the 70’s. Sometimes inspiration sprouts from unlikely sources.
Now the photograph – far removed from its initial form – has been digitally manipulated to become Kuwaii’s abstract signature print for the season. Meanwhile accent colours of poppy red and ice blue have also been pulled from here. The collection features keyholes, double halternecks, mesh and contrast piping; a restrained take on the sports luxe theme. Key pieces I’d suggest you try on, when next you visit Kuwaii’s Brunswick showroom, include the red ‘Oasis’ trench coat, softly cascading in waves at the front, the perfect-for-spring ‘Elements’ print skirt, the remarkably transformable ‘Delta’ dress and the wear-anywhere ‘Lustre’ maxi dress.
For the full preview of the collection you’ll just have to wait until one of the next issues of Russh magazine hits newstands.
