Regular readers may have had hints at the fact that I love a fancy cocktail as much as a new dress. In Melbourne when you’re handing over at least $18 for a something to sip on it had better be worth it.
And worthy are the nine Australian finalists for the World Class cocktail competition, including local entrants from Black Pearl (one of my favourite bars) and The Alchemist (now on the ‘must visit’ list). This competition seeks to find the best bartender and spans 40 countries around the world. For our semi-final, bartenders were invited to create a drink around one of three Winter themes; Gentleman’s Cocktail, Hot Drink or Dessert Serve. It appears – as in fashion – that the art/science of mixology has trends and seasons too. As the competition is founded by Diageo’s Reserve labels, the concoctions will heavily feature Ron Zacapa 23 rum, Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Scotch Whisky, Don Julio Reposado tequila.
