A palpable shift in fashion festival patrons occurred earlier this week, as victory rolls, scarlet pouts and tattoos aplenty descended upon Central Pier. ‘Von Follies’ lingerie by burlesque performer Dita Von Teese is the latest incarnation of the Designers for Target series in Australia. Obviously a major drawcard was Dita herself; slinking down the runway in a sheer trench coat that the diminutive dancer shed to expose a black sequinned lace ‘overwire’ bra and full briefs with garter belt.
The collection itself is apparently derivative of Dita’s own vintage pieces, or pieces from bygone eras that she can no longer source. She even lent her own personal accessories to be styled within the show; glittering capes, fascinators, masks and gloves. I wonder if the whips are also her own? The crowd was as enthusiastic for the diverse models as they were for the star of the show. When one accidentally lost her Louboutin – usually a catwalk faux pas – it turned into a Cinderella moment (though one far removed from Disney’s version) as a gentlemen in the front row helped her slip back into it. This saucy Cinderella was lacking a fairy godmother however, and had to make do in red polka-dotted unmentionables.
Dita must have appreciated the welcoming atmosphere. Expected to take her final walk once again clothed, she appeared clad only in her lingerie to a standing ovation from fans.
