LMFF: National Graduate Showcase 2012

The National Graduate Showcase is always among my favourite runways at L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. The collections of the Australian fashion design graduates selected to show here range from highly experimental, uninhibited by commercial restraints to saleable fully-realised ranges that I’d buy in an instant. This year inspiration was derived from such varied sources as aeronautics, nostalgia and Russian history.

The highlights for me were Chris Ran Lin, Amelia Agosta, Stephanie McPherson, Natalia Grzybowski, Anisha Bhoyro and Laura Huishan Li. I’ve shared Chris Ran Lin’s menswear before. His  unique way with knits and embroidery isn’t far off from being worn by Melbourne’s males. Amelia Agosta’s 3 dimensional pieces remind me of anatomical armour. Modern silhouettes and a nifty broken glass motif were presented by Stephanie McPherson. Holy couture; somebody puh-lease put Natalia Grzybowski’s entire collection into production. I hope I never find out where her studio is as I may be tempted to break in and steal her glorious, botanical designs (every last one of them).  Anisha Bhoyro’s pieces, sculpted by ingeniously pulling threads, were as subtle yet impressive as ever. While a sculpted leather range from Laura Huishan Li lived up to its windswept moniker. Here’s a few young designers I can’t wait to see more from in future…
