L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival Top 13

I like to scour the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival program for gems; those events, exhibitions and showcases away from the spotlight of the main L’Oreal Paris runways. Usually I can edit them down to the top 10 essentials but this year the list quickly topped 20, then 30. Finally, after ruthless culling, I present my top 13. These are the LMFF 2012 events that I’d go to if I were you:

Penthouse Mouse – All on its own, PHM is like the fashion festival you have when you’re not into fashion festivals. PHM will feature art, jewels and innovative labels like Limedrop’s Elle De, Kings of Carnaby, Di$count, above., Ellison, Neo Dia, Livia Arena and Alistair Trung.  This year PHM hosts a live photoshoot, shop-able stalls, parties and their very own runway show or two.

Fashion Torque – Don’t miss the revamped, special LMFF edition of this live fashion talk show. Little ol’ moi may even get my torque on.

The Spirit of the Black Dress – Equals part elegant and edgy, the true spirit of the exhibition of black dresses is sustainability or slow fashion. This year’s finalists include Bento, Bhalo, Lisa Taranto, Christina Exie and Sonya Kraan.

The Front Row – An extension of her Red Carpet Project, designer Georgia McCorkill will refashion dresses to be worn by various front row attendees over the festival week. It’s no longer a faux pas to be caught wearing the same dress (as long as Georgia’s worked her magic with it first).

National Graduate Showcase – Just like magic, here is a glimpse into the future of Australian fashion. I take it as a promising sign that more than half the graduate designers selected are from Melbourne campuses. Supported by Sportsgirl in the true sense of the word, this is always one of my absolute favourite shows of LMFF.

Cosmic artifacts – If you’re short on time wander past the windows of Pieces of Eight gallery as designer Alexi Freeman and jeweller Tessa Blazey continue their stellar collaboration. They promise a peek at Spring Summer 12/13.

Aves Insecta – New Melbourne label Tettmann.Doust seem to be making all the right moves so far. Here they collaborate with artist Yandell Watson for an exhibition and runway show to celebrate their birds and bees inspired range.

The Supercool – The mobile purveyor of very cool designer goods will set up a fashion focused offering next to St. Ali for LMFF.

Operette – We’ve had ballet x fashion many times over. Now it seem it’s the opera’s turn to get the designer treatment. Time to get cultured.

Grace Kelly: Accessories. The Must Do’s & Dont’s – This Bendigo Art Gallery exhibition devoted to the fated princess is already sublime (Princess Charlene of Monaco will even visit). This specific event, presented by the curator of NGV’s fashion and textiles, will be an approachable how-to on, as the cheap glossies say,  steal her style.

High Tea: Fit for a Princess – After viewing the Grace Kelly exhibition, what else is there to do but sup and sip on French champagne at a couture style high tea by Bright Young Things? Inspired by the blonde beauty, this will be worth forgetting your fashion week diet for. Wonder if the aforementioned Princess Charlene scored an invite?

No Home – The fashion film festival returns with all new designer label x film-maker pairings. The showcase features everything from little more than moving lookbooks (transfixing as they are) to full-blown dramatic featurettes. Labels on film this year include Aurelio Costarella, Friend of Mine, Lui Hon, Song for the Mute and last year’s crowd favourites, Upper Left Arm among others.

Marnie Haddad/Nicole Rose exhibitions – Fashion editorial photography and film goes high-end with these dual exhibitions at the Nellie Castan gallery.

What events are you looking forward to the most this year?
