Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 2011: Top 10

The Grand Hyatt’s ‘Residence’ space was transformed into a Springtime tableau last week courtesy bouquets of lisianthus, roses and orchids: a fitting setting for the 2011 Melbourne Spring Fashion Week (MSFW) program launch.

As you have probably heard by now model Sophie Van Den Akker has been unveiled as the face of the festival while, in light of the launch of her own label Project D, Dannii Minogue will perch front-row as the ambassador for the week. Alexandra Black jewellery adorned outfits from Melbourne’s established and new leading lights of design; Arnsdorf, Neo Dia, Yeojin Bae, Dhini, Nicholas by Green with Envy, Jessica Hendrick, Dom Bagnato, Arthur Galan AG and Thurley. I believe that’s an all Melbourne label line-up; fitting as 80% off this year’s designer participants will be local!

There’s only five weeks to go until MSFW, so without further ado here are my top 10 picks of things to do at fashion week. In no particular order;

I’m sure to race through Kevin Murphy’s Style Bar at least once during the week when my tresses need some front-row worthy primping. If I have more time I’ll stop by his Fashion Week Salon for a personal workshop on which Spring Racing looks work best for the carnival.

The dapper Melbourne gents that are milliner Richard Nylon, Fashionising’s editor-in-chief and a representative from luxury men’s store Harrold’s will talk about “ManStyle“.

A dozen of our bright young designers will feature in an emerging designer exhibition curated by stylist and MSFW creative director Connel Chiang.

RMIT toasts its most prominent designer alumni – you’re sure to be familiar with most of them – in this showcase.

The student runways always seem to be my favourites of the week.

Any event featuring a Madame Brussels cocktail in (newly manicured) hand must surely make this list. Miss Fox presents her Quintessential Beauty Masterclass.

Obus is throwing a fiesta to launch their new Spring Summer collection. Ole!

Speaking of throwing a party; the one and only Lady Petrova is hosting a Prom. Date optional, corsage a must!

One can never pass up an offer of High Tea; especially when a good dose of style is served up with your sandwiches.

Last but certainly not least, the Green Fashionista Workshops will teach us how to (re)create jewellery, fashion and millinery pieces.
