Shalini Coelho‘s debut collection entitled ‘The Treasure Chest’ is a gilded range of versatile pieces intended to travel fluidly from officewear to an outfit suited to after 5 (or as I prefer to call it “martini-o-clock”). Below, the budding Melbourne designer shares the Coelho story so far…
Can you tell us a bit about your fashion journey on the way to launching your own label?
After I graduated from RMIT my mission was to get a job in the industry as soon as possible. So, I joined Laura Ashley and worked in store as a sales rep for about a year and while I was there I made it known that I had just graduated in design so they would allow me to be creative and help with visual merchandising.
My dream was to always own my own label so I decided to save up as much money as I possibly could and also interned for Dhini and Spencer and Rutherford which was amazing as I learnt a lot of tools and tricks of the trade.
What type of woman do you have in mind when designing your pieces?
The Coelho woman is elegant, confident and glamorous! She loves wearing versatile garments that look good, feel great and can transcend from work to wine. She thinks “bold and beautiful”.
Can you share the inspiration for your ‘The Treasure Chest’ collection?
The treasure chest was inspired by my trip to India. When I think of a treasure chest I think of beautiful opulent jewellery so, I thought what better way than to use rich textures embellished with sequins for a Spring/Summer collection.
Are there other labels/designers that you admire?
My of my all time favourite label is Lanvin! The label strikes the perfect balance between elegance and attitude. Everyone woman who is confident, daring and wants to be empowered yet still feeling like a million bucks loves Lanvin!
One of my favourite Australian labels is Thurley. Each collection supersedes the other in the most spectacular way possible. The clothes are so feminine and glamorous, you feel like you’re a star.
Can you give readers a little sneak peek of what’s next for your label?
The next collection A/W12 titled – ‘Passages of Time’ is an infusion of structure and fragility incorporating blends of beautiful fibres with ornate trims.
Coelho will be showcasing their Autumn Winter 2012 collection at Fashion Exposed as one of 12 emerging Australian designers to compete in Debut.
