Spirit of the Black Dress Gala 2011

For several years now the Spirit of the Black Dress exhibition has been heralding green as the new black. At the gala opening last night, they sent their chosen ten black dresses down the runway for the first time in the event’s history as well as screening their first fashion film.

The designers employ various methods of ensuring each dress is of an eco-friendly or sustainable standard; from cutting up old leather jackets and re-purposing crochet as lace, to ensuring there’s not a scrap of fabric wasted to doing every little bit of the making themselves. Many of the designers involved have long had an interest in green-ing their work and/or already use sustainable processes in their main fashion lines.

You can experience the photographic exhibition of works by a seriously amazing creative team along with designers Dan Jones, Leanne Dempsey, Alyana Eau with Priscilla Lim, Georgia McCorkill, Samantha Lilian Koval, Cristina Tridente, Alex Trimmer of Sosume, Katherine Hamer, Clea Garrick with Nathan Price of Limedrop and Melina Hollway for yourself.

Find the Spirit of the Black Dress from Saturday 12th to Monday 21st March from 12-6pm at The Trust, 405 Flinders Lane in Melbourne.
