Catherine Leon Debuts ‘Element of Freedom’ A/W 2011

The likes of Sass & Bide and Kit Willow are the trend setters of Australian fashion; Catherine Leon could be described as their little sister with attitude. They share the same fashion DNA, both cool and contemporary but Leon’s challenge to their supremacy comes with an edge of youthful defiance.

Her debut collection for Autumn/Winter 2011 offers a solid line of easy-to-wear basics. Loose fitting tees, sporty black pants and sassy shift dresses are the mainstay of the range and they’re essential to Leon’s ethos of ‘timeless classics’. She makes these styles her own with strong, graphic prints. Defiantly bold in black and white, the abstract designs are representative of her modern art inspirations, turning simply cut vests and doll-like dresses into statement pieces.

Defining the range is the ‘Edie’ jacket. With its neat zip front, collarless neckline and skinny, ¾ sleeves it is clean and modern; the perfect cut for the girl who wants to add shape and distinction to an outfit without the formality of tailoring. Its design is at the heart of the collection and the label itself, which is looking to make classic cuts with a contemporary edge a signature look. That said the ‘Coco Reminiscence’ dress makes the prettiest statement. The girlish simplicity of the short, shift style contrasted with the boldness of the monochrome print says more about what the label has to offer.

Leon has the ability to combine the charms of the feminine with the coolness of the masculine. She has already mastered the meeting of these characteristics in a collection that is both subtle yet subversive in its sex appeal. It is this design handwriting that will shape the future for Catherine Leon. Where her fore-sisters have gone before, we’ve “been there, done that” and quite literally bought the t-shirt. We’re looking for something different, something fresh and unique, and it’s with this new signature that Leon could make the ‘Australian look’ her own.
