LMFF: Off the Runway

As you probably know the schedule for the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2011 has just been released at a soiree at Government House (see the gorgeous models and our new fashion overlord Grant Pearce at the party below). Before you get too bewildered at the amazing line-up of glamorous events to choose from; I’m here to help. Sometimes the best gems can be unearthed away from the highly publicised catwalks. Here, in no particular order, are my top things to do and see at the LMFF 2011 – away from the official runways.

L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2011 LMFF Program launch at Government House

Saturday 5th to Thursday 17th March – Fashion Models on Film – Showing a quartet of films exposing the glamour and grime of the modelling world backstage.

Friday 11th March – Cultural Program Launch Party – Who cares if you didn’t score a coveted invitation to the glittering LMFF program launch? Make up for it as Penthouse Mouse kicks off the LMFF cultural program for 2011.

Monday 14th March – Fashion Full Stop Opening – With musical performances and a retrospective of Australian fashion through the decades this sound like one big party, and the entire city is invited.

Wednesday 9th March onwards – The Spirit of the Black Dress – It’s been sublime from the very beginning, but every year this eco-minded photographic fashion exhibition of 10 black dresses (created by 12 designers this year) gets better. All hail the LBD.

Wednesday 16th March – National Graduate Showcase – Sportsgirl presents some of the brightest shining fashion design graduates from around the country. This is the last time many of them will get the chance to be weird, wild and wonderful or at  least carefree with their designs.

Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th March – Drawn From Fashion – Leeloo presents this artistic event which sees fashion photography from the LMFF archive reinterpreted by prominent illustrators and artists in the field such as Bec Winnel, Erin Flannery and Kelly Smith. So much to love!

Friday 18th to Sunday 20th March – Fashion Weekend – The London and Sydney event comes to Melbourne for the first time featuring designer labels such as  Arabella Ramsay, Alpha 60, Friend of Mine, LIFEwithBIRD, Manning Cartell, Leonard St. & Seventh Wonderland on sale at up to 70% off!

Tuesday 15th March to Saturday 2nd April – Daniela Federici exhibition – A retrospective of Fedrici’s photography career. Includes a masterclass on 17th March.

Monday 7th March – No Home – A series of film-makers have collaborated with various fashion labels (like Limedrop, ACNE and Arabella Ramsay) to create stylish celluloid magic.

Tuesday 8th to Tuesday 22nd March – Reptilica – Avant-garde jeweller O.T.T by Lia T presents an exhibition of her work spliced with photography.

Friday 18th to Tursday 24th March – Rising 5 – Fashion labels like Lui Hon, Dhini and Richard Nylon are exhibited in 3-D photography.

Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th march – The Up and Comers Fashion Market – Shop to your hearts content from emerging local labels.

…And if I’m not at any of the above you’ll find me perched on a stool, French Martini in hand, at Westfield’s LMFF Festival Bar or in the L’Oreal Paris powder room getting a much needed touch up.
