“Stories of the Desert” is the sublime Autumn Winter 2011 collection presented by Kirrily Johnston with model of the moment Samantha Harris, dressed as the fierce, feminine modern-day warrior. Inspired by the wild beauty of the Australian outback with its arid landscape and copper sunsets, Johnston’s latest collection is an ode to the extraordinary land we call home. Johnston takes us on a blazing journey with a rich, earthy palette comprising of olive, sand and ochre mixed with metallic-infused chocolate and deep, tarnished reds. The collection maintains the designer’s nomadic aesthetic with sleek copper accessories and rebellious over-the-knee lace up boots. This somewhat aggressive aesthetic is balanced by more classic silhouettes of draped evening dresses, super-fine mohair knits and body-hugging wrap skirts ensuring Johnson’s edgy tendencies are offset by a feminine silhouette.
A dose of intellectual design has been injected into Johnston’s statement prints for the season. The Indigenous artform of dot painting and stencil art is applied onto a medium of statement shirts, draped dresses and skirts; a homage to the relationship between this genre of art and the natural world. Striking a balance between the traditionally beautiful and untamed, Johnson’s A/W collection is a clear statement; her rebelliously tribal yet soft designs should be a magnet for fashion fiends and explorers of lost lands alike.
The designer’s diffusion line of relentlessly cool and downtown chic unisex basics, KJ by Kirrily Johnston, comes into A/W 2011 with fresh and understated pieces. Shareable wools, chunky knits and breathable modal jersey pieces come in a palette of subdued grey, tar and black. With new silhouettes such as the daring paper bag pants, kimono sleeve cardigans and crop dress, individual pieces are not only suited to layering but appeal to those who crave for minimalism.
KJ sees the introduction of a new accessories line which includes brutal black combat books, canvas backpacks and hand knitted beanies. Boyfriends and girlfriends alike will be marching to the beat of the KJ military drum. Versatile and simple, yet still retaining a sophisticated appeal, KJ’s basics aren’t so basic after all.
