Who is this elusive Milton? We may never know, yet his namesake store ‘A Shop Called Milton’ holds clues the mystery. I gather Milton must be charming and warm and appreciates lovingly made items from local designers and artisans (more on Milton here). A Shop Called Milton is multi-functional as a working studio, retail store and art gallery.
Amy Wright and Jess Cameron-Wootten are at Milton’s helm. Amy’s paints botanicals (taking after her grandmother) and creates printed textiles for the home under her label Wunderplant. She prefers the idea of creating pieces that are functional so that people interact with her art rather than just creating a work that may be pretty yet largely ignored. Jess is carrying on his father’s work with his label Wootten, hand-crafting beautiful men’s and women’s leather footwear. Together their powers combine under the banner Woot ‘n Wright which makes leather satchels and accessories. Presently the duo also have other “day jobs” – I don’t know how they find the time though I do like the idea of leading a double life.
Amy and Jess have also sourced a variety of complimentary items from other local creatives which makes shopping for soaps (there’s a coconut ice version!), lovely botanical fragrances, Servery & Spoon jams, art, jewellery, hats and even flowers on Saturdays a joy here. Pleasing to see a little sparkle return to Greville Street. In an adjoining room Milton hosts artists in a gallery. Currently travel photography by Adrian Outjers is being exhibited. Titled ‘Unempty Spaces” Adrian’s work traverses foreign terrain from markets in Peru to snow covered cities in China. Pssst… if you are an artist or know of one who is searching for inexpensive space to display your work you really should get in touch with Milton quick smart.
Check out their pictures from their Grand Opening (though they have sneakily been open for three months).
