Have you met a ‘Friend of Mine’?

By stylemelbourne

I Friend of Mine 'The Other side of Love' Winter 2010  remember as a child dancing along to Prince as he sung “…so tonight I’m gonna party like it’s nineteen ninety nine!” and not having the slightest clue of what he meant. As years went on, his ‘futuristic’ vision came to fruition on 90’s dance floors; a new wave of fashionable individuals emerged to create their own generation’s look that has again re-emerged to bombard catwalks and infect our fashion magazines. This new 90’s look has influenced the likes of ‘Friend of Mine’, a young line of clothing created by Teale Talbot.

Teale’s designs envision the future, but  a future that is drawn from a now historic standpoint. “My current collection ‘Yesterday’s Tomorrow’ is based on the concept of a futuristic society as seen in a 90’s sci-fi film and also has elements of beach culture and is influenced by the supermodel era. I like to use natural fibres – I use predominately silks and cottons however I also use a lot of jerseys and casual fabrications which contain lycra for comfort.”

Teale began her career in design when teaming up with a girlfriend to create leather bum bags; which were sold amongst close friends and family, soon after they were sold to small retail stores across Melbourne. Teale’s business knowledge gained from studying (she has a degree from RMIT University in Product Development and Merchandising) alongside her practical experience formed ideas for her newly created ‘Friend of Mine’ range.

Her advice to anyone starting a label would be, “have passion for what you are doing and believe in your product. Research your market. Surround yourself with dedicated and experienced people. Lastly get as much advice from people in the industry as possible.”

Teale is making a name for herself by doing just that! Her eccentric style and talent is infiltrating the city of Melbourne. “I love how eclectic Melbourne is and I think ‘Friend of Mine’ connects with this concept as you can mix and match the clothing to create your own individual look. There are no rules to how you wear it – girls are free to experiment.”

Watch out for the upcoming range called ‘The Other Side of Love’ which is based on idols and the rock star’s muse to be released in March 2010. My favourite outfit is the June dress with Robinson boots, it may have you dancing once again to ‘1999′.
