Charisse Black’s ambitious dream is that her label, Does Not Equal, will become a design empire within the next five years; and she just might succeed. Does Not Equal launched their latest jewellery collection Black Truth/White Lies Continuum this week at Comeback Kid. Charisse created the label in 2007 and it has come a long way from the days when she would create one off hand carved wooden pieces of jewellery.
The current collection is a continuation of Black Truth/White Lies, which draws inspiration from her own personal battle with honesty and dishonesty. Her metallic jewellery contains symbolic elements of restriction, violence and power. There is a mix of linear and circular shapes combined with objects such as swords, vintage keys, crosses and hands. There are also unique, simple pieces such as necklaces, bracelets and layered rings displaying plaques inscribed with the collection title and the brand’s logo (the mathematical ‘does not equal’ symbol).
Their exclusive unisex pieces are reasonably priced, challenging the
expensive designer jewellery market in Australia. Does Not Equal
jewellery is designed and crafted locally but it is expected to be
available internationally next year to show the world what Australian
designers are made of. Black Truth/White Lies Continuum is currently
displayed at Comeback Kid and is soon to be available online.
