Designer Series 3

Melbourne’s

Town Hall came to life once again on Thursday evening as Designer Series 3 for Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 2009 showcased local labels to an avid audience including Lance Franklin, Angus Kennett, Bryan Boy and Kasia Z (sporting a stunning emerald sequined mini-dress).

Arthur Galan AG opened the show with brights for boys and draped maxi or kaftan dresses for women. An azure blue flouncy frock stole the limelight with its simple, eye-catching colour and easy shape – no mean feat considering the Technicolor splashes on shirts and board shorts for guys. Classic men’s suiting rounded out the collection with thick pinstripes and highlighted lapels giving off a vintage “Rat Pack” feel.

Rosemary Masic’s Nevenka presented soft gold pieces in the form of a ruffle-bibbed frock, wide leg pants and a hippie-esque summer maxi-dress. These initial designs were offset by vintage-style summer prints in sunset peach and blues on blouses and a vivid pink and purple combo on a deep V-neck, tulip-skirt frock.

Nicola Finetti’s Nylon Flocks diffusion line is young and sexy yet again. Black was set off by hot pink (fast becoming the colour of the impending season) and toughened up with zip details on ruffles. The designer is a master at creating interesting, bold shapes and folds without fuss.

The charming Shandor and Boyd at Leopold never shy away from the use of vivid, block colour. This collection, expanded to include womenswear (huzzah!), has a Miami Vice meets yacht club feel with blazers, cropped pants and a nautical red , blue, black and white colour palette. It’s fresh and easy to wear and I particularly liked the simplicity of their bodysuit-come-swimsuits with their sweetheart necklines and string halter-necks for the ladies.

Bettina Liano kept her rock and roll aesthetic alive with exaggerated shoulders on an asymmetrically buttoned-up, denim jacket, frayed fabrics and a loose-fitting, gold mini-dress. She lost me with her take on an early 90’s blouson shirt paired with a faded, frayed denim bodice dress – the pieces may work better separated – I think it was just too literal for me. However her pure white, pocketed frock is a timeless, instant classic with its simple yet thoughtful details.

Things were also kept simple at Jack London with streamlined suiting. The collection had a touch of mod with skinny ties and jailhouse rock stripes. The colour palate was keep strictly to easy-to-wear blacks and greys with a splash of red (either raspberry or true red). Wayne Cooper finished the show, and like Nylon Flocks, he included a lot of hot pink against black but also vibrant blue leopard print. The man does know how to create a statement, sexy party dress or gown (if you have occasion to walk the red carpet as I obviously so regularly do). Now to choose between the one-shouldered, toga-style dress and the liquid black gown with its mini-train and ruffled bodice?
