Kookai ‘Love and Lies’ Collection Review

Love and Lies – two words that seem simple enough, but that have a hidden complexity within. Surprising, uplifting and full of mystery, these words appropriately name the Autumn/Winter collection by Kookai.

So, where is the ‘Love’ in this collection? Love is in the classic feel of the designs, the effortless look of luxury. Looking for that favourite black and white but with a twist? Kookai takes the simple white tank and embellishes it with feathers. A statement in itself, team the piece with a staple black structured Empire Jacket and comfy Shiny Leggings for ultimate ‘just-threw-this-together’ glam.

The Winter Storm Jacket deserves a notable mention. Its almost boyfriend-style cut in our winter favourite wool invites us to curl up on a cold winter morning, while at the same time chanelling boho sheek.

Accessories are the key to this collection. Brave the cold with a chunky Albina scarf and beanie, or for a more Parisian look, try the Irisa Felt Hat.  The Suede Ankle Boot cannot be surpassed for its versatility. If it is legs-for-days that you are after, wear with leggings or sheer tights, or for those who dare to reveal their inner vixen, try them with a basic mini – who said we had to leave them in summer!?

Now that we have covered the Love, you might be wondering where the aspect of ‘Lies’ comes into play. As far as I can see, it is a lie that winter means dreary, monotone dressing. Along with its more structured basics, Kookai aims to prove just this.

The fusion of violets, musks and floral undertones combined with stronger greys and mushrooms brings an element of warmth into winter. My personal favourite? The soft femininity of the Secret Garden Panel Dress; but don’t be mislead by its name, with a Studded Wrap Belt and platform boots, it easily accomodates the garden party-crasher within.

Frilled tees and sheer blouses are juxtaposed with street style pieces such as the leather Metropolis Jacket to work the biker look that is definitely making another appearance this season.

Kookai’s latest collection is a combination of predictability and surprise. We expect to see knitted dresses and cardis in our winter line up, however femininity combined with rock-star might be a little unexpected.

The collection creates the image of the young fashionista (or the more recently named ‘recessionista’) experimenting with style and creating a look all their own – no easy feat when catering to the winter months.

While there are some fashion risks that you may not be willing to take, (I for one am in no way ready for the blouson pants that feature in this collection) one would be hard pressed to not find something of their own style in the Love and Lies Collection.
