Forever Barbie; A Pop Culture Icon Exhibition

Regular public transport commuters may have noticed a rather large tent had been constructed next the Flinders Street Station in past days. You may have also noticed that the tent is that certain, instantly recognisable shade of bright pink that denotes only one thing…Barbie is coming to town! The “Forever Barbie – A Pop Culture Icon” exhibition brings together over 300 dolls, some rare, in the biggest showing of its kind ever in the Southern Hemisphere. It celebrates 50 years since Barbie popped into the Western conciousness – in all her zebra print bathers and ponytailed glory – and held small girls and Mr. Smithers-like fans in rapture. Over the decades Barbie has attracted her fair share of controversy, feminist critiques and applause, been a doctor, an astonaut, owned her dream house and, shock horror, been brunette!

The Forever Barbie expo will also feature workshops with Barbie’s own US fashion designer Robert Best, the chance to customise your own doll in the “Styled by Me” suite, plenty of those all important accessories and teeny tiny miniature outfits (and surely plenty of muffled, giddy squeals of delight). The show at Federation Square runs from Friday 26th June to Sunday 12th July and is open daily from 10am to 6pm. Tix are $15 or less and you can buy them from here or at Target. Put it in your diaries guys and dolls!
