Michi Girl ‘Through My Eyes’ Exhibition

Weather Girl and style maven Michi Girl has been sending us her daily shopping picks along with a dose of her trademark ascerbic wit for years now. She now has a book ‘Who Gives a Frock?’ out and sponsors events – it’s turning into a mini-Michi empire. Along with her minions Chloe Quigley and Daniel Pollack, Michi invited us along to take a peek at her latest exhibition of 36 unique tote bags displayed at Fitzroy’s Lamington Drive Gallery. The particularly rainy evening couldn’t dampen the vibrant colours exhibited.

As part of the Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2009 Michi put together a collaborative, progressive art project on a whopper of a canvas and with the help of a few arty friends. Artists Kat Macleod (who Michi Girl subscribers would be familiar with as she provides illustratons for Michi’s site and emails), Rebecca Wetzler, Tin & Ed, Rik Lee, Beck Wheeler, Andrea Innocent, Oslo Davis and Good Wives and Warriors all lended their painting hands. Each was assigned a specific colour and let their imagination run free on the canvas over the week. You can watch stop motion videos of the process here.

Afterwards the canvas was cut up and stitched into a series of unique bags. Each bag is whimsical with tiny little details that will make you smile or peer closer. The broken up pieces are like wearing a tiny little piece of a larger fractured fairytale over your shoulder. The bags are now being sold with proceeds going to Oxfam. We’ll let you know when her online store is open for business.
